Material & Texture: The Power of Details in 3D Visualisations In architecture and design visualisation, it is often the small
In architecture and design visualisation, it is often the small details that transform a scene from “good” to “impressive”. Materials and textures play a decisive role in this – they give surfaces a realistic appearance and evoke emotions. But what makes a successful material representation?
1. The power of realistic textures
Whether wood, concrete, glass or fabric – every material has an individual structure that must be accurately reproduced in 3D visualisations. High-resolution textures with natural irregularities ensure authenticity and prevent surfaces from looking artificial.
2. Light and reflections – the secret weapon for depth.
How a material reacts to light determines how it is perceived:
✔ Matt surfaces (e.g. concrete, untreated wood) absorb light and appear calm and elegant.
✔ Glossy materials (e.g. polished marble, glass, metal) reflect light and lend the scene dynamism and luxury.
✔ Transparent and translucent materials (e.g. frosted glass, water) create interesting light effects and depth.
3. The level of detail makes all the difference.
Subtle details such as slight scratches, fingerprints or subtle signs of wear make materials more tangible. High-end renderings often use normal maps and displacement maps to realistically depict even the smallest irregularities.
4. Haptics through the combination of different materials.
A perfect rendering is often created by contrasting different surfaces. The combination of soft and hard, warm and cool materials (e.g. wood & steel or concrete & velvet) creates visual interest and makes a scene appear more lively.
Conclusion:
The right choice and implementation of materials and textures is a decisive factor in the quality of a visualisation. They tell a story, convey emotions and make architecture tangible – even before it actually exists.
